Ecumenical
Advocacy Days For Peace with Justice
Celebrating more than 65 years of peace work!
In 1935, 75 persons concerned about peace met
at the Convention of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)
in San Antonio, Texas. The result was the formation of Disciples
Peace Fellowship (DPF). It is the oldest peace organization
of its type in any denomination. For more than 65 years, DPF has been
keeping alive the passion for peace and justice.
Peace with justice for all!
The original covenant of DPF includes working
to abolish war and to create the conditions of peace and justice
among all people and nations. DPF has served as a leaven within
our denomination and in the larger community, pressing for
action toward the elimination of war, giving support to conscientious
objectors and fostering the use of nonviolence in interpersonal
and intergroup relations.
Disciples Peace Fellowship recognizes that to work for peace,
we must work for justice. That work centers on both education
and action. Four issues currently serve as central foci for
DPF:
- demilitarization and the nuclear threat;
- abolishing the death penalty;
- seeking justice in maquiladora plants along
U.S.-Mexico border;
- corporate responsibility for financial investments
by the church and individuals
DPF is an open and affirming organization, welcoming all
people regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, or sexual
orientation.
Work and witness
How does DPF "keep alive the passion for peace and justice?"
Individual members and chapters work in a variety of ways
within their own communities. In addition, the work and
witness of DPF nationally includes:
Sending out young adult Peace Interns who teach and model
peace to youth in church camps and conferences.
Holding events at General Assemblies that include a breakfast,
resolutions, a booth, and pre-assembly gatheringsall
designed to underscore the importance of peace and justice
for Disciples.
Publishing News Notes quarterly, with updates on actions
and issues.
Networking among DPF members and with other justice groups
both in and outside of our denomination.
Being a part of DPF
The work and witness of DPF nationally is directed by an
executive committee which meets twice a year. More than
a dozen DPF chapters are in existence throughout the country.
When one joins DPF, they join a multitude of folks from
the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) who care about
and work for peace and justice in our denomination, our
country and our world. Although issues and emphases may
vary, DPF provides opportunities to network and share together
in working for peace.
