General Assembly

Disciples Volunteering

Local Mission Work at General Assembly, Portland!

Plans are underway to continue our tradition of making a difference in the community we "descend"upon for assembly. A local committee has already confirmed several projects for both a pre-event and work on Monday and Tuesday of the Assembly. AND we are very excited about two projects to take place in the convention center so everyone can be involved!

Jesus Calls us into Service

Pre-event for all ages: July 21 to 23, 2005: Begins Thursday night the 20th with opening worship and orientation. Work all day Thursday and Friday (evening activities to be determined). Work most of the day Saturday (with movement to Assembly hotels in the afternoon as the Assembly starts that night).

Cost: $40 for adults and $25 for youth under 18 (Family cost not to exceed $200)

Cost includes: Housing for Pre-Event: Included in price is sleeping on the floor of a church with showers at a college or YMCA or similar.

Additional cost is an inexpensive hotel (which one is to be determined) or staying at hotel of your choice.

All food supplied. T-shirt, water bottle, worship, etc.

Work: (Under construction-so to speak!)

Register for the pre-event.

Pre-Event

  1. "Purging" of junk in Mallory Ave. Christian Church to clear space for use of rooms. This work will begin Thursday night; yard sale will be held Friday; and junk hauled away on Saturday.
  2. Twenty people who sign up before will go with HIV/AIDS patients to the beach on Friday.
  3. Work at an Ecumenical Emergency Food Center ... putting together bags of food, sorting donations, doing intake on those who come to get food, working in a community garden.
  4. Work at the Oregon Food Bank ... a HUGE warehouse that supplies food for all food banks in Oregon ... Some will sort food, measure it, etc., and others will work in their huge community garden. (Be part of Return to the Garden!)
  5. Register for the pre-event.

During Assembly

Work projects

Monday and Tuesday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. (as before), Lunch available for a fee.

  1. Portland Public Schools: landscaping and painting
  2. Habitat for Humanity Re-Store: Stocking furniture
  3. Patton house: Homeless shelter with a huge garden.
  4. Oregon Food Bank (see above)
  5. Emergency Food Program (see above)

Something new for all Assembly participants:

  1. Knitting prayer shawls. Many churches have started knitting prayer shawls for the chronically ill. As they knit, they pray for the recipient. We'll teach anyone who wants to learn, how to knit! People can sit and learn to knit and then take it in to the business sessions to work on! Shawls can be taken home or given to an organization in Portland. See PDF document for more details. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING YARN and NEEDLES!
  2. Assembly blood drive: We're looking to gather 100 pints per day! Offer your arm and a few minutes of your time and you can save a life!
  3. "Quilts of Hope." Simple quilts made ahead of time and brought to the convention center to be tied. We'll have quilts laid out so EVERYONE at the assembly can come and tie at least one knot. (Download the PDF file or MS Word document.)
  4. Register to participate.

Our goal? Have everyone experience being called by Jesus into service.

Watch for info on how YOUR congregation can make and bring a quilt to be tied! They will then be taken back to your community to homeless shelters, or homes for abused women or wherever you deem they are needed.

Download a flyer in PDF for your congregation! (152 Kb PDF file)
