Call it what you want …
it's about food and people
Call it a potluck, pitch-in, bring-a-dish supper, carry-in, faith supper, clambake, or covered-dish supper: the underlying theme is the same: food and people … in community. It‘s the idea that each person brings a dish of food to share with the community. After all, Disciples already have a pretty good idea what it means to gather around the table in Communion … we've been doing that for nearly 200 years.
With this issue, the Home Mission Advocate editors have invited DHM's acting interim president, Dan Clark, to share one of his favorite dishes served at his church's potlucks.
Apple Nut Cake
3 eggs
1 3/4 cups sugar
1 cup oil
2 teaspoons vanilla
2 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon soda
1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/4 cup chopped nuts
2 1/2 cups chopped apples (three to five medium sized)
Combine and blend: eggs, sugar, oil and vanilla. Add flour, salt, baking powder, soda and cinnamon. Mix well. Fold in apples and nuts. Bake at 325 degrees for an hour in a lightly greased 9x13 pan. Cool and cut. Dust with confectionary sugar if desired.
Susan Mathes is a member of Washington Avenue Christian Church, Elyria, Ohio. DHM Interim Acting President Dan Clark, who serves as an elder at Washington Avenue Christian Church, described Mathes and her husband as "unsung heroes of the congregation," because of their behind-the-scenes contributions to the congregation for at least 30 years.
