NAPAD Visioning Conference Update:
Youth & young adults

Vision I draft: Develop leadership of youth and young adults

Goal: Forming a committee of 15 to 18 youth and young adults that represents each unique geographical and cultural cluster of NAPAD, with the imperative of representing all facets of the NAPAD youth and young adult constituency.

Purpose of Committee:

  • Leadership development and strong sense of empowerment.
  • Liaisons to the broader church including specifically Young Adults (YA), General Youth Council (GYC), CWF (Women), Disciples Men.
  • Plan/implement and publicize vital NAPAD youth and YA events.
  • Promote and communicate events across the life of the Church that involve youth and young adult.
  • Identify and address NAPAD youth and young adult needs and issues including: generational and cultural gaps worship styles, etc.
  • Identify specific goals to increase participation in events across NAPAD and the life of the Church.
  • Encourage and connect youth and young adults to explore the options of calling of God to ministry.
  • Create and maintain a list of youth and young adult context at each NAPAD church.

Overall Timeline: Two-year roll-off (2002)

Who: Disciples Home Missions Staff, Youth Ministry (Randy Kuss) & Young Adult (Bruce Fowlkes) NAPAD: 15 to 18 youth (ages 14 to 18) & young adults (18 to 35) two adult sponsors, ex-officio capacity, provide support, NOT directive

Plan:

  • Steering Committee: Dan Sung, Haeijin Chung, Cindy Kim, & Gaylord Yu.
  • Geunhee Yu to provide list of ministries of each NAPAD church to team. By May 1, 2000?
  • Will contact ministers and create list of 2 youth contacts at each NAPAD church
    • Korean (Los Angeles): Jaikwan Ahn & Haejin Chung. Identify 4 Y/YA
    • Chinese: Daniel Chiang & Lian Jiang. Identify 1-2 Y/YA
    • Filipino (Los Angeles & Canada): Pat Payuyo & April Lewton. Identify 2 Y/YA
    • Japanese (Los Angeles): Haejin Chung
    • Vietnamese: Kim Tran
    • Rest (Mid-west, Southeast United States): Cindy Kim, Gaylord Yu, Dan Sung

Timeline: List completed and commitments from each representative by June 15, 2000. Committee to be voted on by the NAPAD Convocation.

First Meeting in 2001: Meet on the off-year of NAPAD Convocation

Staffing: Youth Ministry Office (Randy Kuss) & Young Adult Office (Bruce Fowlkes) have ownership to help make youth interested

  • Budget for first meeting: $7,000

Funding Source: To be identified. (Possible: NAPAD, Youth & Young Adult Offices, Division of Higher Education, Regions)
