DHM president resigns

May 21, 2007
Indianapolis

Arnold C. Nelson Jr., president of Disciples Home Missions (DHM), has announced his resignation, effective Aug. 18, 2007.

Nelson, who has served in the position for five years, made the announcement at the May 17-19 meeting of the DHM board in Indianapolis.

"I tender my resignation as president of Disciples Home Missions with every hope this will allow the whole Church to better determine how the mission of serving congregations and clergy of our dear Church can be carried forward to better serve God and God’s whole people," he said. "This opportunity to so serve has been a great honor and I look forward to other avenues to give glory to God in Christian ministry."

"The Board has accepted, with regret, the resignation of Rev. Nelson," noted Mary Lou Kegler, DHM board chair, and a member of Swope Parkway United Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Kansas City, Mo. "He has served DHM well. He has worked very hard and shown accomplishments in the areas of leadership development, transformation and Christian vocations."

Nelson, an ordained Disciples pastor, previously served as regional minister in South Carolina for five years. Prior to that, he spent 21 years as a congregational pastor. From 1984 to 1997, he served at Pulaski Heights Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Little Rock, Ark., and from 1976 to 1984, he served at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Camden, Ark.

As DHM president, Nelson has been a delegate to the National Council of Churches. He is also a member of the Standing Committee on Renewal and Structural Reform, the General Commission on Ministry, and a board member of both the Council on Christian Unity and National Convocation.

He has been active throughout his ministry at all levels of the Church. General Church appointments include participation on the General Board; Administrative Committee; Disciples Home Missions Board of Directors; and the General Conference of Disciples Men. He also has contributed to a number of ecumenical and interfaith organizations.

The DHM board is putting a transition team into place that expects to name an interim president soon, Kegler said.

A general ministry of the church, Disciples Home Missions is committed to equipping Disciples for Christ and connecting people to the life changing love of God.
