Disciples Home Missions Board is pleased to call two excellent persons to fill in as interim president until a permanent president is called. Daniel Clark will be acting interim president taking his call immediately following the departure of the Rev. Arnold Nelson Jr.
Clark will begin Aug. 27. The Rev. Dr. Don Shelton will then assume the position of interim president in January 2008. Both come to DHM with excellent qualifications and both have been lead by the Spirit of God to accept this task.
Clark has served on the Board of Directors of Disciples Home Missions for the last 10 years, chairing the Finance Committee for more than two years. At the 2007 General Assembly of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), DHM honored Clark with the Distinguished Leadership Award. He has served on the General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the Board of Directors of the Christian Church Foundation. Clark has chaired the Board of Trustees of the United Christian Missionary Society. He has served a two-year term as secretary of the Ohio Disciples Men.
A graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, Clark earned a Master of Business Administration degree (M.B.A.) from Tulane University in New Orleans. He is a graduate of the United States Army War College, a 10-month executive management program with emphasis on strategic thinking.
Clark served on active duty in the United States Army for more than 26 years, retiring in the grade of Colonel in October 1988. He also served as the chief financial officer of Medina County Public School District for 16 years. Clark has been involved with United Way for more than 12 years, serving on a board of directors and as a campaign manager.
Clark currently serves his local church, Washington Avenue Christian Church, Elyria, Ohio, as elder (third term), as assistant treasurer (15 years), and as a member of the Stewardship Committee (more than 10 years). He is married to Rev. Dr. Janet Long, (Disciples Moderator, 1995-97) and has four daughters and three grandsons. He enjoys travel, physical fitness, music, and sports.
Shelton currently serves as regional minister and president of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) Pacific Southwest Region. He is able to assume the position of DHM's interim president because of a two-term limit as Regional Minister and President in the Pacific Southwest Region and Shelton has completed those two terms.
Shelton hails from Bakersfield, Calif., where he was also ordained in the Christian ministry. Prior to being named Regional Minister in 1995, he was the senior minister of his home congregation. He also has held ministerial positions in several congregations in California, Oregon and Colorado. He has demonstrated leadership in the ecumenical ministries in the communities in which he has served. Shelton has launched and helped maintain ministries for people in need, bringing energy to the work of sharing God’s love and building up of the Body of Christ.
Shelton has served as president for Habitat for Humanity-Golden Empire, president of the Greater Bakersfield Council of Churches, and director and counselor of over 36 high school or junior high camps/conferences/backpack trips.
He has served on the Board of Directors of the California Christian Home, United Church of Christ Insurance Board, Bethany Towers, Chapman University, Disciples Seminary Foundation, Christian Church Foundation and Wilshire Christian Church Foundation. He has also served on the General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Shelton received a Bachelor of Theology degree from Northwest Christian College, Masters of Divinity degree from The American Baptist Seminary of the West, Berkeley, Calif., and an honorary doctorate from Northwest Christian College. He also completed graduate studies in education at St. Mary’s College.
Shelton and his wife, Linda, have been married for 42 years and have two adult children, Shonna and Stacy, both graduates of Bethany College. Shelton enjoys golfing and china painting.
We welcome both Dan and Don to Disciples Home Missions. They bring skills to the office that will help DHM accomplish the goals and programs that the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) needs. We know that it was through the leading of the Holy Spirit that they come to serve the church in this capacity.
