Volunteers in Mission returned to All Peoples Christian
Center for a Leader Development
Worktrip
in January 2002. The last time (and the first time) VIM was there
was 1993: only six months after the Rodney King riots. As you can
imagine, many things have changed ... but many remain the same.
T.J. Bottoms is no longer there, but his dream of changing the lives
of all people lives on through the people at All Peoples and
its new pastor, Greg Turk. Saundra Bryant, after 19 years as
director, is running an incredible ministry at the Center. The
All Peoples family is still as loving and accepting and hospitable
as ever. We joined with them in worship, eating and Bible Study
as well as helping them for a week in their lively daily ministry
to the neighborhood.
Once again, lives were changed as 12 Disciples, UCC's and Presbyterians
gathered to experience a worktrip and learn to lead
one.
In addition to working on the physical building (which
has a newly renovated gym floor!), we worked with children
at the day care center, the after school program for middle
school kids, and the soap-making facilities of Homie Accents.
This newest ministry of All Peoples employs two ex-gang
members, Moses and Ricky, to make and sell soap, learn job
skills and train others. Meeting and working the guys changed
our lives and made our experience one that we will never
forget.
The attached pictures
help tell our story...but to really understand the ministries
at All Peoples, take your group there this summer and become
part of the All Peoples family! And if you need some training
before you lead a trip, join VIM on our next leader
development trip. Watch the DHM Web site for more
details.
