Where in the world are Disciples youth?
Choose a location . . .

JAYNA POWELL instructs a crowd of youth house builders during the ICYF Conference three-day house blitz-build in July 1999.

There are many things to consider as you select a location for your work trip. But it will be important to let your group have some say in the choice. What kind of ministry excites them? Where have they never been? What would be new ground? Where is there a need? What skills do they have? Remember, all communities have needs for mission. So, set your sights, do your homework, pray, then look forward to an incredible experience. You are not just building structures, you are welcoming the Reign of God!

Consider local Disciples ministries

Congregations that need repair
Contact a congregation in an urban setting and ask if you could do some painting or minor repairs. Congregations with limited budgets usually will welcome such an offering. Most congregations would welcome a group to sleep on their floor and cook in their kitchen. Local YMCAs usually allow you to use their showers.

New congregations trying to get started
Disciples are constructing brand-new church churches in some places, with the help of Vision Builders! A pilot project that began in 1999 has volunteers constructing a church building for a new church in Columbus, Ohio. For information about other builds, contact: Vision Builders! at (800) 274-1883.

Regional campgrounds
Contact a regional office--maybe even your own--and ask if you could do a special project on their campgrounds. Housing and showers are right there and your group would provide a much needed service!

Think about disaster relief

Disasters
Around the world, disaster strikes. Youth and other hands-on mission workers bring the good news of hope and help to many people every year by venturing out to assist in clean up and rebuilding. If you're ready for this kind of adventure, www.disasternews.net can help you determine where help is needed. Some regions sponsor such trips; or get help in choosing a site by contacting Week of Compassion director, Johnny Wray.
